The precise number of languages in the world, not counting dialects, is constantly fluctuating, but modern linguists agree the number around 7,000. There are, of course, major languages such as English, German, and Spanish, but also many minority languages such as Pemón and Ainu. Over 2,000 different languages are spoken in Asia, as well as Africa. Roughly a third of languages are dying out however, though efforts are being made to preserve some languages and their cultural significance.
