Every 7 years, the Eiffel Tower is repainted to protect the iron from oxidation. If you’re thinking that must take a lot of paint, you’d be right—it requires 60 tons, to be exact. It also takes 25 painters to complete the job, and the tower is repainted entirely by hand. Interestingly, the color of the paint has changed throughout history, from red-brown to yellow-ochre to chestnut brown to bronze. And the tower is also painted with a slight gradient, with the lightest color at the top, in order to “counteract atmospheric perspective.” Crazy, right?
