It all started when Frau Troffea stepped onto the street and started twisting and turning. Her solo performance lasted nearly a week before three-dozen other Strasbourg residents joined her. The only explanation offered was “hot blood” and that the people would just have to shake the fever away. The town even brought in a stage and background music for the afflicted. Many people collapsed from sheer exhaustion, heart attack or stroke. After three months of the plague, those affected (almost 400 by the end) were sent to the mountainside to pray for absolution. It might sound like a hoax, but the event was well documented and is just as baffling to us today as it was 500 years ago.
