In 1903, the Wright brothers took flight for the first time in Kill Devil Hills, four miles south of the now-famous North Carolina town. That first flight- piloted by Orville Wright- lasted a whole 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Before their flight plans took off, the Wright brothers were mechanics and owned a bicycle shop. Their interest went from pedals to planes in the 1890’s after German engineer Otto Lilienthal’s glider flights attracted worldwide coverage and inspired the inventive brothers.
