It’s been dubbed the “ultimate chill spot.” Jeffreys Bay, as its officially called, has been an oasis for surfers and beachgoers for generations. But before the waves were filled with colorful surfboards, the bay caught the eye of ship captain Jeffreys. Jeffreys sailed his cargo ship up and down the East Coast of South Africa in the 1840’s until a case of scurvy broke out on one of his expeditions. He was forced to go to land and after realizing the potential of the cove, built a port on what is today the main beach. Today, the site is home to the J-Bay Open, one of the most famous surfing tournaments in the world.
