Iceland’s Vigdís Finnbogadóttir was elected President of Iceland in 1980. A divorced single mother, she was extremely popular and was reelected three times, holding her presidential post until 1996. Iceland has long been recognized as a pioneer in gender equality. It was the first government to have an equal number of men and women in office, and in 2015, was ranked #1 on the World Economic Forum’s Gender Equality Index.
