As the Olympic Games were based off the sporting events of the Ancient Greeks, it’s only fitting that the modern revival was first hosted in Greece. The 1896 Summer Olympic Games are recognized as the first modern Olympics, and featured 14 nations competing in nine different sports. In those first games, winners received silver medals instead of gold, and an olive branch to reference the original Olympic games. Despite some petitions to host all future Olympic Games in Greece, the Olympics did not return to Greece until the 2004 Summer Olympics, 108 years later.
