Established as a national park in 1992, Dry Tortugas is a collection of 7 islands situated 70 miles off Key West, Florida. This remote park is only accessible by boat or seaplane, but still draws hundreds of visitors every year. The Civil War era military fort and prison, Fort Jefferson, occupies the largest island in the park. Built in 1846 to protect against piracy, the fort was abandoned during construction. Despite being left unfinished, it’s one of the largest brick masonry structures in the Americas, and is composed of over 16 million bricks and 2,000 arches.
